Spiritual Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning Your Practice

Lately we have been doing a lot of cleanup around our home, I guess you could call it a spring cleanup. This takes me back to a time when I was integrating my near-death experience (NDE). Friends and I made a trip to my mentors home in Virginia, but she didn’t know we were coming.

Margaret Kean was my NDE mentor and I’d like to share a tidbit of what she showed me. Here is an excerpt from our book Voyage of Purpose where I was speaking about that time.

Margaret lovingly and graciously invited us into her home, though with an odd look. Little did we know at that moment that she had just asked the universe for some help and received instant confirmation from Spirit with us ringing the doorbell.

Margaret headed a healing missionary in Swaziland, Africa. She and her assistant, Libby, spent eight months, or more, of the year bringing medicines and healing to the poor in Africa. Margaret and her husband, Len, had decided to sell the retreat center to allow her more time in Africa. Libby was away drumming up financial support for their upcoming mission work. Hearing all this, William and I immediately offered to help get things ready to sell the property; in exchange Margaret offered guidance, sharing, and her company.

One of the many tasks we tackled was cleaning the stone floor in the front foyer. William and I got down on our hands and knees to scrub it clean. While we were in the process, Margaret walked by and in passing bestowed a gem of wisdom that stays with me to this day: “How you approach cleaning is the very same way you approach your spirituality.”

Some people clean by starting at one end and work systematically and thoroughly. Others have a scattered approach and hit spots here and there. There is no wrong or right way, only the way we choose. Whatever your cleaning style is, it is more than likely it is going to be the same method you approach your spirituality. There is no wrong or right way, it is just your process. Trained as an engineer, I do things systematically. Mindfulness works well with a systematic approach and my cleaning habits reflect that. Margaret’s words not only affirmed my approach to spirituality, it made me realize that you can use cleaning to focus and reflect on your spiritual practice…

From time to time those words return to me, and I reflect on them. Occasionally we should perform a little housecleaning to shake the dust off our practice. For me that is returning to what started me down the road of spirituality, my NDE. For others it may be connecting and experiencing the joy, beauty, creativity, and healing of living on Mother Earth. Whatever it is, return to the root of your practice and revive it so it may again shine in your heart, bringing revived vigor and inspiration.

Use your style to approach and infuse your practice with the original loving intention that created your practice. Clean the glass so to say, and as we are shinning things up the light can clearly illuminate our future path. Again there is no wrong or right way, but make sure to utilize “your” process, to keep it on your path.

Along your path you may find that others may have a parallel path

Joseph Campbell once said “I have a theory that if you are on your own path things are going to come to you. Since it’s your own path, and no one has ever been on it before, there’s no precedent, so everything that happens is a surprise and is timely.”

Along your path you may find that others may have a parallel path or may intersect yours from time to time. Enjoy their assistance and friendship. Embrace your own path and your own practice; allow it to propel you into a future of positive potentials.

In our spring cleaning we let go of past hurts and pleasantness, because they weigh us down on the journey. We let go and live in wonder of this moment, always looking forward to the next, forever keeping our light clean and bright. The time has come, enjoy your cleaning.

Blessings,
David Bennett

inner symphony

Don’t allow life’s adversity to spiral into greater and greater circles of suffering. Instead infuse Love into every situation and ask your higher guidance for harmony. Listen to the guidance and feel the flow that is surrounding us. It is like hearing music that rhythmically flows around and through us. Move into the flow and watch as adversity is washed away with loving harmony.

The more we connect with our resonant harmony the more we are in touch with our True Being. This, after all, is our natural state of being, not some supernatural accomplishment. Deep within us we feel the connection to oneness, we only have to allow that love to be present. Acknowledge the love; bring it into all aspects of life like work, play, study, and reflection. Soon we see harmony and abundance are growing in both inner and outer worlds.

Door after DoorSometimes we find ourselves feeling unfulfilled. During those times look again to your connection with your True Being. Within your Being is the link to the greater consciousness of oneness and a way to identify that missing something. It is very much like opening one door after another, each time remembering a little more of our purpose and solutions. Always be patient and allow the resonance of your Being to guide, direct and heal.

Once we begin to live in balance with our True Being we each create our own realities and manifest in our lives what is needed to be whole and complete. The inner life is the true reality…yet, our inner guidance provides for making life in this world more precious and productive. Don’t retreat from activity in the world; embrace the ongoing effort of making this moment and our future the best it can be filled with love and harmony. Be the center of your “Being,” radiating your good works outward into the world.

Since Voyage of Purpose was released, I have been receiving more and more correspondence from people who are just starting on similar paths as mine. Some are asking, “How can I develop communication with Spirit and find my purpose?” In this post I want to encourage and give some initial guidance and recommendations.

Communication with Spirit

Communication with Spirit

Developing our communication with Spirit can be confusing and difficult, especially in the beginning and even more troubling when trying to use that communication for finding purpose. I’ve learned it requires spending time to discern what is Spirit communication and what is normal mind chatter. I had similar problems especially after my Near-Death Experience (NDE), because my mind would sometimes try to sound like Spirit. I found it helpful to start using creativity to help me get a handle on what was Spirit and what was incessant mind chatter.

I believe our inspiration comes from Spirit. I know we all have something that we love to do that brings about inspiration maybe it’s music, art, crafts, writing or whatever. As we do these activities that bring us joy, I recommend devoting all our attention to it and see what new ideas pop into our consciousness. Explore the new ideas further and try to accomplish them. I found as I worked in my creativity my heart would sing when new inspiring ideas came into my thoughts. That is a very subtle way Spirit can start to communicate so we can hear it above the chatter in our brains.

I also recommend meditation to everyone on a spiritual path, I know, I know, that in itself can be a challenge. Meditation is great, yet if your having trouble quieting the mind try a ceremony before the meditation. Ceremony gives the mind a chance to wind down. Something like lighting a candle and giving your gratitudes for all the good and all the obstacles in life, then visualize them going into the light so they can achieve the highest good for all. I found that simple ceremonies gives the mind something to do and helps in quieting it, For example, look at all the ceremony that is part of church services, they have a purpose.

MeditationTake a moment to unplug from all the technology and visual sensations. Focus instead on “Being.” Once we tap back into the world around us we can see it as it really is, multiple streams of consciousness that are part of a single wholeness with infinite possibilities.

Our Purpose reveals itself with spiritual maturity. Once we commit to living a spiritually heart centered life, our purpose will start to reveal itself. First it comes in small ways. For example, when we have synchronistic events occur it tell us we are in the flow and where we are supposed to be. Be patient and quietly aware while looking for the purpose and it will show itself, meanwhile enjoy the direction spiritual development takes you.

Many times in life we are attracted to what we need, mostly this give us the skills or knowledge we will need later. When we keep at it, we find what works for us. We are each unique individuals that are helping the universe shift into a new tomorrow. The more we work on ourselves the more we help the universe become a more peaceful and sustainable environment. Spirit is quietly waiting to give us the assistance necessary once we relax, focus and understand our ability to communicate.
